Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre (née Élisabeth Jacquet, March 17 1665, Paris – June 27 1729, Paris) was a French musician, harpsichordist and composer.
Life
A childhood prodigy, Elisabeth Jacquet played the harpsichord before King Louis XIV to inaugurate her career as a virtuoso performer. She married the organist Marin de La Guerre in 1684. Thereafter she was known as Elisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre
Works
Elisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre was one of the few women composers of her time. There has been a renaissance of interest in her work and a number have been recorded in recent years. The work of Elisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre includes:
- Dance suites for the harpsichord (2 collections: 1687 and 1707) ;
- Opera Céphale et Procris (1694) ;
- Trio sonatas (1695) ;
- Sonatas for violin and harpsichord(1707) ;
- Cantatas: of both a religious (1708 and 1711) and secular nature (around 1715).
