Żurrieq is one of the oldest towns in Malta, and has a population of approximately 10,000. Zurrieq is situated in the South of Malta. It became a parish in 1436 and the parish church is dedicated to St. Catherine of Alexandria. A popular tourist destination in Żurrieq is the Blue Grotto, which is noted for the purity of its water. Another destination for tourists is the Xarolla Windmill. One can also visit the recently excavated catacombs situated next to the windmill bordering the village of Ħal Safi. Żurrieq is also known for its two feasts, which are celebrated every year. The feast dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel is celebrated on the third Sunday of July. The feast of its patron saint, Saint Catherine of Alexandria, is held on the first Sunday of September.
