'Columella'

Encyclopedia : C : CO : COL : 'Columella'

A Dutch hybrid raised at Wageningen, Columella was released for sale in 1989. It is a tall, fastigiate tree with very upright branches, but broadens in later years[link]. The medium-size, rounded leaves are similar to English Elm, arranged in clusters on short twigs. 'Columella' has proven immune to Dutch Elm Disease. Wind resistant, it has been planted throughout the Netherlands, where it is popular as a street tree. In southern England, the tree flowers in March. The name commemorates the Roman agronomist Columella who introduced the Atinian elm (more commonly known as the English Elm) to Spain from Italy circa AD 50.
