Encyclopedia : G : GA : GAL : 'Galway' Joe Dolan
Joe Dolan was an Irish folk musician from Galway.
Sometimes called "Galway Joe Dolan", to distinguish him from the more famous Joe Dolan from Mullingar, Dolan was a founder member of 60's folk group, Sweeney's Men, which were founded in his home town in 1966. He had travelled in Central Europe with Andy Irvine the previous year, after spending part of 1965 in Masada, Israel doing what he referred to as "digging up history and living in a tent".
With the outbreak of the Six Day War he headed to Israel. According to Andy Irvine, he "[arrived] with typical Dolan luck on the seventh day!".
