.45 Schofield

Encyclopedia : 4 : 45 : 45S : .45 Schofield

The .45 Schofield is a revolver cartridge developed by Smith & Wesson for their Model-3 American break-top revolver. It is similar to the .45 Colt round though shorter and with a slightly larger rim, and will generally work in revolvers chambered for that cartridge. A small number of the revolvers were purchased by the United States Army in 1875, but due to its lesser power compaired to the Colt .45 it was never adopted as the official side arm of the Army.

It is important to note that the .45 Colt cartridge will not work in revolvers chambered for the .45 Schofield due to the greater length of the .45 Colt cartridge.
