.int

Encyclopedia : I : IN : INT : .int

.int is a generic top-level domain (gTLD) used on the Internet's Domain Name System.

According to current IANA policy, the .int gTLD is reserved for international treaty organizations; however, in practice, .int domains are also granted to those non-governmental organizations with "observer" status at the United Nations. Additionally, .int had been recommended for "Internet infrastructure databases". The contents of .arpa had been slated to be moved into .int, but in 2000 the IAB recommended that no new infrastructure databases be added to .int and that .arpa retain its current use. [link]

The .int domain, under the variant .eu.int has also been historically used by European Union-affiliated institutions. However, on May 9, 2006 (Europe Day), the .europa.eu domain was opened for business, and it is expected that most of aftermentioned websites with EU affiliation will move to the new domain in the coming years.
