.root
Encyclopedia : R : RO : ROO : .root
.root is an Internet top-level domain which has been [observed] to exist, but no explanation of its purpose has ever been given. It was apparently created and maintained by Verisign, the company which operates some of the root servers of the Internet's domain name system and constructs the root-level zone file used by all of them.
The only entry that is in its zone is vrsn-end-of-zone-marker-dummy-record.root, which consists of a TXT record containing the word "plenus", which is Latin for "full" or "complete". This may be a marker to signify the end of the zone file.
According to the InterNIC zone files, the single .root entry, vrsn-end-of-zone-marker-dummy-record.root, was replaced in 2006 with just vrsn-end-of-zone-marker-dummy-record, i.e. without the .root TLD.
However, later in 2006 it was reintroduced, as can be seen from the [InterNIC root zone files]. The existence of the record may be verified on Unix and Linux systems using the following command:
dig vrsn-end-of-zone-marker-dummy-record.root in any
You can also find a .root TLD in Open Root Server Network's rootzone named ORSN-END-OF-ZONE-MARKER-DUMMY-RECORD.ROOT. This entry returns the word "europe".
