0 A.D. is one of two projects Wildfire Games is working on through 2006; the other is a Tolkien-based fantasy game called The Last Alliance. The design for 0 A.D. started as a mod for Age of Empires II, but the possibilities for creativity and improvements were limited. It was decided instead to make a full-featured, freeware game. 0 A.D. is a real-time strategy game with the following promised features:

Historically accurate
6 unique civilisations
Seasons and weather
Provinces and territories
Realistic maps/terrain
Realistic naval warfare
Comprehensive editor
Several multiplayer modes

Cultures

The first edition of 0 A.D. will allow the player to control any of six ancient civilisations from the pre-common era. Each culture will be represented at the peak of its civilization, somewhere along the timeline of 500 B.C. to 500 A.D.
