The Toll-free telephone number was acquired in 1986 to facilitate the ordering of flowers and floral arrangements via the telephone by Jim McCann, an owner of several flower shops in the New York City area since 1976. . The company specializes in outstation delivery of flowers within the United States and has since expanded to handle internet orders through their site 1-800 FLOWERS.COM (NASDAQ: [FLWS]).

The company is centered in Carle Place, New York on Long Island.
