100-Series Highways

Encyclopedia : 1 : 10 : 100 : 100-Series Highways

The 100-Series Highways of Nova Scotia are a series of expressways, Super-2s, and fully-divided freeways. They connect to the major cities in Nova Scotia, such as Sydney, Halifax, Truro, and New Glasgow. A few of these roads also carry the Trans-Canada Highway designation on their routes.

The typical naming convention is to add 100 to the road the freeway bypasses, or upgrades, such as Nova Scotia Highway 3 and Nova Scotia Highway 103. They are equal in function to the 400-Series Highways of Ontario, Autoroutes of Quebec, or even the Interstate Highway System of the United States.

Historical Note: Nova Scotia's original arterial highway number system had route number signs in the same shape as the U.S. Highway route number signs. These signs are now used for Trunk routes.
