- Canute invades England. He and Edmund II divide the country; after Edmund's death he becomes sole king.
- Bulgaria becomes part of the Byzantine Empire (1018).
- Rajendra Chola I, son of the illustrious Rajaraja Chola I The Great, became the Chola Emperor. There is confusion on the exact date. According to Professor Kielhorn it is between 27th March and 7th July.
