1449AM URB is the student radio station for the University of Bath, England.
History and format
URB (University Radio Bath), previously URB 963, or currently 1449AM URB has been around since about 1972 and is a student-run radio station at the University of Bath. It was launched by Annie Nightingale.
The old 963 frequency was carried by induction loops which were placed strategically around campus of the University of Bath and reached all of the campus residences. In 1995, renovations to the road by Westwood severed the wires leading to the Westwood block, meaning that URB could only broadcast to Eastwood and Norwood. After many years of persuasion and persistence, planning permission was finally granted for a 10-metre radio mast to be erected on campus so the station didn't need to worry about wires at all.
URB has been available on 1449AM (through a LPAM)since 8 February 2001 at 14:49. There was a 11-minute sequence up to the first show broadcast live from the Student Union Plug bar on campus. The finest presenters from URB 963 all had their say until 9pm when the Relaunch party kicked off.
The Relaunch party was a free event that packed out the Plug bar and Venue until 1am. URB DJs provided the soundtrack, and it was a varied selection - from Rock to Dance to the ultimate in Cheesy music to keep everyone happy!
The first song played after URB relaunched was Delerium - Silence. However, the first song played on the new transmitter was Basement Jaxx - Red Alert.
Neil Fox, better known as Dr Fox, is the most famous person to have started his career at URB. Richard Evans, of Radio 1 Newsbeat fame, also took his first stumbling steps in the radio industry at URB.
Student Radio Awards
In 2002, Ben Vane won Best Male Presenter, URB came second in the Best Marketing category, and URB also came third in Best Station. That was followed in 2003 with a second place in the Best Speech Based Non-Factual category, courtesy of the one-hour comedy special Because Fish Are Funny.
