- March 1 - The Salem witch trials begin in Salem Village, Massachusetts Bay Colony with the charging of three women with witchcraft.
- June 1 – 3 - The battle of La Hougue is the decisive naval battle in the Nine Years War. The durable dominance of the Royal Navy – beginning with the Invincible Armada – is confirmed and lasted up to the Second World War.
