  • The National League contracts from twelve to eight teams and assumes the lineup of teams it will keep intact through 1952.

  • The Western League officially changes its name to the American League and moves teams into Chicago and Cleveland, but retains its minor league status for this season. Chicago wins the pennant for this first year with the new name and last year of minor league status.

  • 1900 Summer Olympics takes place in Paris, France
  • *The Olympic status of the games was very underplayed - many competitors did not realise that they had participated in the modern Olympics.
  • *Women took part in the modern Olympics for the first time. The first sportswomen to compete in the games were Mme. Brohy and Mlle. Ohnier of France in croquet. The first female champion was Charlotte Cooper of Great Britain in tennis.
  • *France wins the most medals (100), and the most gold medals (25).
