Encyclopedia : 1 : 19 : 199 : 1995-96 NHL season
The 1995-96 NHL season was the 79th regular season of the National Hockey League. Twenty-six teams each played 82 games. The Stanley Cup winners were the Colorado Avalanche, who swept the Florida Panthers in four games.
This was the first season for the Avalanche, who were previously known as the Quebec Nordiques. This was also the last season for the Winnipeg Jets, as they announced that they would move from Manitoba to Arizona and become the Phoenix Coyotes.
The 1995-96 NHL season was the last season (as of 2006) in which the defending champion (the New Jersey Devils) didn't make it to the playoffs, finishing two points behind the Tampa Bay Lightning for the 8th and final playoff spot.
