1995 Nunavut Capital Plebiscite

The 1995 Nunavut Capital Plebiscite was the third territory wide plebiscite in the history of the Northwest Territories, Canada . The plebiscite was held on December 11 1995.
The plebiscite was not held in the entire territory, but instead was held in the area of the Northwest Territories that was to be split off into the new territory of Nunavut. The purpose was to select a capital city.
The plebiscite was run under the Northwest Territories Plebiscite Act and overseen by Elections Northwest Territories. The plebiscite was non-binding, and the results were to be taken by Government of Canada's Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development, Ron Irwin, to the federal Cabinet.
A breakdown of community results will never be released: all the ballots were sealed and taken to a neutral site for counting in order to prevent animosity between communities.
