The 2006-07 NHL season will be the 89th regular season of the National Hockey League (NHL). Originally, the NHL would have celebrated its 90th anniversary this season; however, the cancellation of the 2004-05 NHL season pushed the 90th season back until the 2007-08 NHL season. The NHL All-Star Game will return after a two-year absence when the Dallas Stars host the event at American Airlines Center on Wednesday, January 24, 2007. The Stars will be hosting the NHL All-Star Game for the first time since 1972, when the franchise was known as the Minnesota North Stars, and for the first time since the 1989, it will be played on a weeknight.

The season will start on Wednesday, October 4, 2006 and run through Easter Sunday (April 8) 2007, with the Stanley Cup Playoffs to begin on Wednesday April 11, 2007 and end no later than June 11, 2007. On June 19, 2006, NBC announced that it will air four more regular-season games and three more playoff games in addition to its originally scheduled airings for this season. On June 27, 2006, the NHL announced that the salary cap would be increased from $39 million up to $44 million dollars per team. [NHL cap increases to $44 million]
