Candidate Cities

The cities that have confirmed that they will bid to host the Commonwealth Games in 2014 are:

Yakubu Gowon called for all Nigerians to support the games for the "glory of Nigeria". He suggest Nigeria would be a prime location for the games because of its unity, serenity, topography and availability of standard sporting facilities. If Abuja is successful, it would be the first time the Games were held in Africa.

Glasgow was announced as the preferred candidate over Edinburgh (which hosted the Games in 1970 and 1986, and hosted the inaugural Commonwealth Youth Games in 2000) following a cost-benefit analysis by the Scottish Executive. In April 2006 the Glaswegian Sunday Herald newspaper wrongly reported that Scott Logan, the Chief Executive of the Halifax bid, claimed that the "London Olympics ‘will harm Glasgow Commonwealth bid’" [link].

Halifax, Nova Scotia won the Canadian bid in an unanimous decision over three Ontario locations, York Region, Hamilton and Ottawa. Canada last hosted the Games in 1994 in Victoria, British Columbia. If successful, a new stadium and many other new sporting facilities will be built. These would become national training facilities after the games. A new stadium would also aid in Halifax's quest for a CFL team, and possibly act as a venue for Canada's 2018 FIFA World Cup bid.
