The 2024 Summer Olympics, what will be officially known as the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad, is an international athletic event that has yet to be organized by the International Olympic Committee. The winning bid should be announced in the summer of 2017.
Potential Bids
Brisbane, Australia
Australian subtropical city Brisbane would seriously consider bidding for the Olympic Games in 2020 or 2024, Queensland Premier Peter Beattie has said. His announcement came after IOC President Jacques Rogge, who has said the IOC would love to see a bid from Brisbane in future.Nonetheless, Olympic officials are urging Brisbane not to be too eager in pursuing the idea so soon, because the 2000 Olympics were held in southern Australian counterpart Sydney.
In 1985, Brisbane failed to win the bid for the 1992 Summer Olympics, which was held in Barcelona.
Auckland, New Zealand
Auckland, New Zealand is believed to be considering a bid for the 2024 games if they do not win the right to host the 2020 Summer Olympics. Auckland has the advantage of having a highly multicultral population and a position as a major economic center of the Pacific. The city has previously hosted a number of large sporting events including the 1990 Commonwealth Games, the 2003 America's Cup and is set to host the 2011 Rugby World Cup and the 2015 Cricket World Cup.
Philadelphia, USA
Larry Needle, executive director of the Philadelphia Sports Congress, said that if Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, wants to host the Olympics, its earliest 'realistic' chance would be the 2024 Summer Games.A study conducted by eleven graduate students from the University of Pennsylvania showed that Philadelphia should consider bidding for the 2024 Olympics. The study said that among the city's biggest challenges would be convincing the voters who select the host city that Philadelphia is a "world-class city", something that "will require strategic changes in the city’s landscape in conjunction with a persuasive marketing strategy".
The study mentions that when arriving in the city from Philadelphia International Airport, it is difficult to find a route that doesn't include tours of abandoned oil tanks, derelict structures and thousands of tons of waste. In Philadelphia's favour is its location, so close to so many densely populated cities.
Copenhagen, Denmark
The organization of the Games in Copenhagen, Denmark is being investigated by the Danish government [link].Beirut, Lebanon
The Lebanese government is planning on either making a stadium for the Summer Olympic Games in Beirut or in Bsharri for the 2018 Winter Olympics. Whichever city they chose the project will be complete by 2015. The Lebanese government will finish this project with the 1.2 billion dollars with the [Sannine Zenith] project.Paris, France
The city of Paris, France, has failed three times to secure the role of host city for the Olympic Games (for 1992, 2008 and 2012). 2024 will mark the one hundredth anniversary of the last time the Summer Games were celebrated in France. The Minister of Sports of France, Jean-Francois Lamour, had made clear that 2024 represented a choice objective for a Paris bid [link].
