29 Commando Regiment

29 Commando Regiment is the Commando trained unit of the British Army's Royal Artillery. Although part of the Royal Artillery and British Army, this unit is Commando trained to work alongside and provide artillery support to 3 Commando Brigade Royal Marines and therefore it falls under the command of both the Royal Navy's 3 Commando Brigade and the British Army.
It is one of 3 attached Army units in 3 Commando Brigade, the others being 59 Independent Commando Squadron Royal Engineers and 131 Independent Commando Squadron Royal Engineers (V).
Soldiers are drawn into 29 Commando Regiment from the regular units of the British Army's Royal Artillery Regiment.
Organisation
- The Regiment consists of four gun Batteries, each equipped with six 105MM light guns.
- Also within 29 Commando Regiment there is an elite Naval Gunfire Support Forward Observation (NGSFO) unit called 148 Commando Forward Observation Battery, whose role is to direct Naval Gunfire from Royal Navy ships, air strikes from Royal Navy and Royal Air Force aircraft and when ashore, artillery fire from the Regiment's gun Batteries; onto land targets in support of 3 Commando Brigade Royal Marines.
- Attached to the Regiment is a workshop of Commando trained Soldiers from the Corps of Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. The workshop is divided into Battery Fitter Sections which are attached to and located with, each of the Batteries and provide mechanical and maintenance support of all the vehicles and equipment used by the Regiment.
