"4" is the first track on Aphex Twin's album Richard D. James Album. 4 begins with a quick drum beat with frequent drum rolls and a string-like synth, then quickly introduces a voice-like synth, which carries the melody. When the drums fall away, the interaction between synths becomes more polyphonic and uses approximate contrary motion. The cycle of drums and melody to synth-against-synth repeats three times during the piece.
