500th SS Parachute Battalion

The 500th SS Parachute Battalion (500 SS Fallschirmjagerbatallion) was formed by the Waffen SS in the late 1930's, possibly as a penal unit. It later became a fallschirmjager unit and was led by a Hauptsturmfuhrer Rybka. It is reknown as the unit by a daring parachute and glider-borne assault on Tito's headquarters outside of Drvar in June 1944. Tito was not there and the vastly larger partisan forces drove off the SS paratroopers.
