50 Years Of Hits
Encyclopedia : 5 : 50 : 50Y : 50 Years Of Hits
50 Years Of Hits is a country album by George Jones who was signed to Starday Records in 1953, and released his first singles in 1954 and has his first hit with "Why Baby Why" in 1955.
So far, Jones has recored nearly 900 song (comprising 943 albums), countless guest appearances on other artistrs' albums and continues to record new projects. Billboard Magazine states that George Jones has had more charted singles than any artist in any format of music! It is nearly impossible to put togther a really comprehensive collection on George Jones. This collection features one song per year, representing the actual year that song was released. Most of the time, the song chosen was biggest hit of that year but sometimes it was chosen because Jones thought that was the best song that year. The majority of the songs were big hits but several years wheb age became a factor for airplay and we used poetic license in choosing.
All but two of the selections are the original recording. Many of the early Starday songs were rerecordings for Epic in the 70's and we inserted tow (1967 & 1968) because Musicor/Gusto refused to allow us to use the originals. We also played a timeline a bit to compensate for those years (1965-1970). Jones originally recorded "Good Year For The Roses in 1970 but we used a much later version with Alan Jackson. This illustrates what little control an artist has over his music, even when the artist has repaid the record label's investment numerous times.
Music scholars have already written the George Jones saga. They have analyzed his phrasing, song choices, soulfulness, personal life and craziness. He has also told his story in his best selling autobiography, "I Lived To Tell It All." This collection will remain you what great country music is all about. This album went Gold in 2005.
