Fouad S Shalaby photographed Fouad as it approached Earth to within 15 Gm; this was the first time that an asteroid was seen to approach Earth so closely. An unusual sighting by the Count, as a month later, it was seen to cross Earth's orbit, and the scientific community suddenly realised the potential threat these flying mountains presented.
Fouad is named, after his founder, and pronounced after the late King Fouad. Fouad named after the Egypt god of love, better known as Cupid.
