During World War II, the 596th Parachute Combat Engineer Company (596th PCEC) was trained at Camp Mackall, NC. It was then Company C of the 139th Airborne Engineer Battalion. When C/139 was combined with the 517th Parachute Infantry Regiment (517th PIR) and the 460th Parachute Field Artillery Battalion (460th PFAB), the combined unit formed the 517th Parachute Regimental Combat Team (517th PRCT). The 517th PRCT saw most of its combat (in Italy, Southern France, and the Battle of the Bulge) as an independent unit.
