The five of spades is widely known as the unluckiest card in the deck of cards, due to the appearance of 13 black figures in its design. Due to its status, the card can entail penalties in some games, notably Old Maid/Scabby Queen and Crazy Eights/Switch.

Penalties
Old Maid/Scabby Queen
Frequently at the end of this game, the loser must endure a series of strikes to the hand. The number and strength of the blows are determined by the choosing of a random card in the deck. For example, if the 2 of Hearts is drawn, this means that the loser has to take 2 soft strikes and if the King of Spades is chosen, 12 harder blows will be administered. However, in some variations of the game, when the 5 of Spades is drawn, the winner of the game gets to choose any location on the loser's body for the strikes to be made.Crazy Eights/Switch
In some variations of this game, the 5 of Spades makes the next player pick up 5 cards whilst missing a turn. This penalty, however, can be countered with a 5 of Clubs.Mysteries
Origins
The origins of this card's apparent unluckiness is unknown. However, because 13 is considered an unlucky number in western culture, it it theorised that it is of European origin. Also, this site[link] shows that the 5 of Spades has very negative effects in tarot.
5 of Clubs?
Many people find it strange that the 5 of Clubs (whose design also contains 13 black figures) is not considered unlucky as the 5 of Spades, and that it can be used as an antidote in games such as Crazy Eights. A possible explanation to this is that the sharp shape of the spade is threataning, like a sword, and the more round shape of the club is more like a shield. However, this is not absolutely certain.
