774 ABC Melbourne
Encyclopedia : 7 : 77 : 774 : 774 ABC Melbourne
The radio station 3LO began transmission in October 1924 as Melbourne's second radio station, behind 3AR. The callsign "LO" was taken from London's second radio station, 2LO, which stood for London Orchestra.
In 1932, 3LO and 3AR were among the first twelve radio stations to come under the ABC. Then in 1942, 3LO and 3AR moved into new broadcast facilities at Broadcast House, Lonsdale Street, Melbourne. The two radio stations would stay there until 1995.
3LO now broadcasts as 774 ABC Melbourne with a mix of local and national news, talkback and current affairs programming. It also broadcasts as 774 ABC and 774 ABC Melbourne and ABC Victoria as much of its content is broadcast through the ABC Local Radio network in Victoria. The station now broadcasts from ABC's Southbank headquarters.
In early 2006, with the start of the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games, the ABC set up what was known as "The G-Spot" at Federation Square. The G-Spot was an outside broadcast studio where members of the public could watch and participate in the broadcast.
At the same time as the setting up of the G-Spot, 774 ABC became the second Local Radio network to introduce streaming broadcasts in addition to the regular radio broadcast (the first being 702 ABC Sydney). Due to possible disputes over content rights, the Commonwealth Games were not streamed, but were broadcast as usual. In place of these segments, 774 ABC presenters would continue streaming at the G-Spot.
Currently, some sports broadcasts, such as Grandstand, and the hourly news (including the 7.45am ABC News bulletin) programmes are not streamed due to possible disputes or action that may be taken against the ABC. Some cases mentioned in local bulletins, for instance, may be going through the courts and so the ABC is not allowed to stream these.
Instead, alternative segments or music are streamed in place of non-streaming programmes. The 7.45am news bulletin is replaced by a 15-minute segment from ABC NewsRadio and the hourly news bulletins are replaced by either ABC National News bulletins or Radio Australia News bulletins.
