8 x 60 Spitz

Encyclopedia : 8 : 8X : 8X6 : 8 x 60 Spitz

This quite uncommon rifle cartridge dates back to the interbellum.

History

When World War I was over, the victorious allied forces prohibited civilians owning a gun in a military caliber.

Because of these new rules, many germans rechambered their rifles from 7.92 x 57 JS (=8 mm Mauser) to 8 x 60 Spitz. For this operation, the Chamber (weaponry) had to be drilled out 3 mm, which only needed a touch of gunsmithing. This way many firearms in an illegal caliber were reused.

After World War II, only a limited number of guns were rechambered this way. The ones that did get converted were mostly because in many countries no special permit is needed for the 8x60S caliber.

Guns

Not many guns use the 8x60S caliber. Some Mauser K98k rifles were rechambered to this caliber. Other firearms based on the Mauser action do use this caliber sometimes.
