Summary
The 9th Continental Regiment was formed on 1 January, 1776 when the 1st Rhode Island Regiment was re-organized and combined with the 2nd Rhode Island Regiment to ten companies of volunteers and redesignated as the 9th Continental Regiment of Greene's Brigade in the main Continental Army. On 12 August, 1776 Greene's Brigade was re-designated as Nixon's Brigade. On 22 December, 1776 the brigade was again re-designated as Hitchcock's Brigade.
