A = Activating Event
B = Beliefs (about the event)
C = Consequences (emotional / behavioral)
D = Dispute (irrational beliefs)
In more detail
The "Activating Event" is that event which leads the client to counseling. Some events can be changed; however many cannot. "Beliefs" about the event may be irrational; the more irrational beliefs, the more the client is likely to be troubled. There are emotional and/or behavioral "Consequences" of the belief system, leading from the activating event. These consequences are the outward signs that lead the client to therapy. "Disputing" irrational beliefs does not solve the problem unless you replace them with a more rational belief system.
Other Cognitive Interventions include:
- Disputation
- Desibels
- Redecision Work
- Cognitive Restructuring
- Thought Stopping
- Positive Self-Talk
- Anchoring
- Reframing
