The A1 autoroute, also known as Autoroute du Nord is a French autoroute, i.e., motorway, which runs between the cities of Paris and Lille. It is maintained by the French company Société des autoroutes du Nord et de l'Est de la France. The road was built between 1954 and 1967 and was the first autoroute of significant length to be built in France. For much of its route it runs close to the line of the LGV Nord line, particularly between the towns of Chevrières and Carvin.
The autoroute starts at Paris' Porte de la Chapelle, originating from the Périphérique and extends through the northern suburbs of the city past the Stade de France and Roissy Charles de Gaulle Airport. After leaving the environs of Paris the road crosses the region of Picardie without coming near any major urban centres. It has major junctions with the A29 and A26 in this area, and a little further north the A2 diverges from the autoroute. The autoroute has a minimum of 3 lanes in each direction.
The total length of the autoroute is 211 km (131 miles) and it is numbered E15, E17 and E19 under the International E-road network road number scheme.
