A205 road

Encyclopedia : A : A2 : A20 : A205 road

The A205 or South Circular Road is a roughly semicircular trunk road that joins west London to east London via south London.

History

The South Circular Road was first proposed in the County of London Plan of 1943, as the southern half of a "C ring". However, the plan was never fully realised, and the South Circular Road is essentially a string of older roads joined together to make one continuous route. At one point it merges with the A3 Portsmouth Road for around a mile in Clapham, near Clapham Common. The road is widely considered inadequate for the job which is relied on to do, and as a result congstion is very heavy at all times, and at peak times traffic is almost at a stand still. The chances of any upgrades to the road are considered slim at best.

Bus Lanes

The majority of the South Circular Road is single carriageway, one lane each way, aside from a small section of dual carriageway near the Woolwich ferry. Some of the wider sections of the road as it travels through Brixton, Clapham and Bermondsey which formerlly were single carriageway, abeit with two lanes each way have had the outside lanes turned into bus lanes. This has an adverse effect on the traffic flow, and has increased congestion and journey times in many areas. However it is the policy of Transport for London (TFL) to encourage the use of public transport, and reduce car ownership within the capital.

Route

The South Circular Road uses sections of pre-existing roads, all of which retain their historic names. The following table lists the main road names and exits from west to east.
