A3 freeway
Encyclopedia : A : A3 : A3F : A3 freeway
The A3 freeway or Transylvania Freeway (Autostrada Transilvania in Romanian) is a freeway currently being constructed in Romania and linking Transylvania to the capital, Bucharest. It is currently the largest infrastructure project in Europe.
The project of the A3 freeway is rather new in comparison to the other infrastructure projects in Romania. The A3 will follow almost the same route as the DN1 road (National Road 1) which became insufficient due to the growing rate of traffic between Bucharest and Transylvania.
The construction of Braşov—Borş section (415 km) of the A3 began in June 2004. The contract has been assigned by the Romanian government directly (without any offer competiton) to the American company Bechtel; that caused some political problems in the Parliament and the discontent of the European Union. Nevertheless, there is an urging need for an alternative to DN1, which is currently the most congested road in Romania.
