Encyclopedia : A : AC : ACA : ACAC ARJ21
The ACAC ARJ21 Advanced Regional Jet is the first jet aircraft for regional flights designed and made completely in the People's Republic of China, with the exception of the engine produced by General Electric. It is designed and manufactured by the ACAC consortium. The first flight is scheduled in 2007 with certification of the type from CAAC expected to be completed in the 4th quarter of 2008.
The aircraft is designed to have 2 variants with capacity between 70 and 100 passengers. The program began in 2002, and its mass production is expected to begin in 2009.
The design of the engine passed the evaluation of the state department at the end of 2005, and the production of the different components for the aircraft started shortly after. All components are to be manufactured by Chinese companies domestically.
Manufacturer
The ACAC consortium is formed to develop the aircraft. The components of the aircraft will be manufactured by the members of the consortium:- Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group: construction of the nose
- Shanghai Aircraft Company: final assembly
- Shenyang Aircraft Corporation: construction of the empennage (complete tail unit)
- Xian Aircraft Company: construction of the wings and fuselage
Variants
- ARJ21-700 - This is the baseline model. It will have a capacity of 70 to 80 passengers.
- ARJ21-900 - This model will have an stretched fuselage based on the ARJ-700. It will have a capacity of 90 to 100 passengers.
- ARJ21F - This will be a dedicated freighter version of the ARJ21-700. It will have a capacity of 5 LD7 containers or PIP pallets, with a maximum payload of 10,150kg.
- ARJ21B - This will be a business jet version of the ARJ21-700. A typical configuration would cater for 20 passengers.
Future developments
Besides the baseline model and the stretched model, there will also be standard range and extended range versions, and also all passenger, freight and business jet variants.Design
The ARJ21 will be built using tooling which was originally provided by the McDonnell Douglas company for licence production of the MD-90 in China. Because of this, it bears a strong resemblance to the DC-9 series of aircraft, with an identical cabin cross section, nose profile and tail. An all new supercritical wing has been designed by Antonov. It will have a sweepback of 25°, and be fitted with winglets to improve aerodynamic performance.Specifications (ARJ-700)
