A BRIEF HISTORY OF AEGEE-MAGUSA

"On the way to be the strongest bastion of AEGEE network and Euroenthusiasts in Eastern Mediterranean..."

In 1994, a group of students from the Eastern Mediterranean University in (Famagusta/North Cyprus) approached AEGEE to establish a local branch in Famagusta..

In Fall Agora 1995 the Comité Director of AEGEE-Europe considered the first application for several months turned it down because of the "political situation" in Cyprus.

The students in Famagusta were disappointed but did not stop. Their European spirit materialized in establishment of the "Europa Team", a student club whose aim was to enter the AEGEE network.

Five Members of Europa Team participated in Fall Agora 1997 which took place in Ankara where they had an opportunity to express their will to become a part of the network to the other AEGEE delegates of AEGEE network.

From 1995 till 1998 the Europa Team kept trying to become an AEGEE antenna, but the CD was not willing to consider its application.

At the Fall Agora 1998, representatives of AEGEE-Györ, AEGEE-Arnhem, AEGEE-Gödöllö and some other antennae prepared a proposal concerning the extension of AEGEE network to Cyprus.

The proposal accelerated the discussions. After long lasting and stressful discussions, a last minute agreement was accepted unanimously, to please all sides:

"A Cyprus Working Group was formed and signed Convention d'Adhesion in order to increase cooperation among all sides. Both groups from Famagusta and Nicosia were recognized as contacts to the network. Within a year after the agreement, both sides could enter the network on the conditions that they do it together, at the same time. If no development takes place within a year, the groups would have the right to enter the network separately, independent from each other, in the General Assembly to take place in 1999 (Fall session)".

Contact Magusa organized its first European event " Journey to the Corner of Earth Touched by Heaven" between 4th-18th July with the participation of 26 university students from 14 different European countries. The event was successfully organized with the supports of Eastern Mediterranean University and under the sponsorship of The Turkish Airlines.

Contact-Magusa signed the Convention d'Adhesion in the Poznań Agora in November 1999, entered the network formally and became AEGEE-Magusa.

9 th of May Day (2000)

AEGEE-Magusa organized its second European event " Cyprus Unlimited" between 10th-24th July with the participation of 28 university students from 13 different European countries. The organization was even more successful than the first with the all kind of supports from Eastern Mediterranean University and the Turkish Airlines.

AEGEE-Magusa was upgraded to the final status (Antenna) and gained voting rights in Fall Agora 2000 in Undine, Italy. Therefore AEGEE-Magusa started to exist as the first and single international student organization in North Cyprus with its own self-representation with full and equal voting rights. In this respect it has a different status than the other international organizations, which has only indirect links via their branches in Turkey.
