AEREON III

Encyclopedia : A : AE : AER : AEREON III

The AEREON III was a rigid airship designed in the 1950s for the United States Navy. Of unconventional design, the airship was to feature three gas envelopes attached side-by-side, with the connecting structures shaped as airfoils to create extra lift as the aircraft moved forwards. Although the full-size AEREON III was never built, a scaled-down version was constructed between 1959 and 1965 and underwent taxiing tests before being scrapped. It was the first rigid airship to be built since the 1930s.
