AMV Hell

Encyclopedia : A : AM : AMV : AMV Hell

AMV Hell (and its various successors) is a series of anime music videos. The AMV Hell series showcases various animes in synchronization with music, but unlike the majority of its predecessors it uses various clips and various songs; the clips generally last no more than ten seconds each before the focus changes to another.

While AMV Hell is not the first anime music video to use this format (a fact that the creators of AMV Hell [attest to]), it is believed to have popularized the format.

AMV Hell uses Osaka from Azumanga Daioh as their mascot in every video and on their [website].

AMV Hell

AMV Hell is the first video in the series. AMV Hell was sent to Fanime, Animazement, and Otakon in 2004 and won awards at all three conventions (including "Best In Show" at Otakon).

One of the videos is a parody of the Ellen Feiss Apple Switch Commercial. See Ellen Feiss for further info.

AMV Hell 2: Son of AMV Hell

While the trailer at the end of AMV Hell would imply otherwise, AMV Hell and AMV Hell 2 were released at about the same time. AMV Hell's website stats "In order to keep AMV Hell "family friendly" and able to be shown at conventions, we opted to move the more controversial stuff into a separate video."

While AMV Hell is generally viewed as funny and entertaining, AMV Hell 2 is geared towards a more mature audience as it has some nudity (most notably from Perfect Blue).

AMV Hell 3: The Motion Picture

A project that involved approximately 60 AMV editors, AMV Hell 3 is over an hour in length. It is quite possibly one of the longest anime music videos ever made.

AMV Hell 0

AMV Hell 0 is said to include the worst material cut from the family-friendly AMV Hell 3. Like AMV Hell and AMV Hell 2: Son of AMV Hell, AMV Hell 0 was created alongside AMV Hell 3 to separate the more offensive material from the lighter video.

In the comments for AMV Hell 0 (on the downloads page) there are indications of just how bad it is; users have called it "sick and wrong" and stated that they "have probably been scarred for life".

AMV Hell: Perfect Collection

This is a DVD ISO file (a disk image) containing all of the AMV Hell videos (AMV Hell, 2, 3, and 0). It also contains deleted scenes, subtitles in various languages for AMV Hell 1 & 2, and some other extras.

Championship Edition

AMV Hell: Championship Edition (also referred to as AMV Hell:CE) contains a compilation of the funniest entries in a contest where participants were asked to create the funniest video to a specified song. It is not included on the AMV Hell Perfect Collection DVD ISO because it was made after the ISO was created.

AMV Hell 4?

The creators of AMV Hell have stated that "AMV Hell has been played out and ripped off so many times now, we don't feel like it will be possible to surpass what we did with AMV Hell 3, at least not at this current point in time." The possibility of another AMV Hell video exists, but it would be difficult to live up to its predecessors and the plethora of competition that has developed.

Effects on the AMV Scene

AMV has become rather popular in the AMV subculture; it has inspired a number of other creators to make similar videos.

It is fair to say that AMV Hell (and the other videos like it) could be described as a subgenre of AMVs (if not an entirely different genre) due to the radical departure from the common AMV format (usually one song for the length of an entire video).
