AOHack programs

Encyclopedia : A : AO : AOH : AOHack programs

AOHack programs were add-on programs to America Online that violated their Terms of Service, performed illegal activities, and disrupted the service. These programs were sometimes referred to as Progz or Proggiez.

These programs, like AOHell (the first), were normally made in Visual Basic versions 3.0 and 4.0. Rare programs that were not distributed widely were made in Delphi or C++. The Visual Basic AOHack programs often would use stolen code from other AOHack programs. The new programs would be only slightly modified by their creator.

These programmers largely were used to distribute pirated software, called warez, to scroll macros, and to phish for passwords and credit card numbers. They had generally the same features as AOHell, such as scrolling chat rooms, and [leet] text conversion.

Programs

With the eventual upgrades to the main AOL software, going from the simple AOL 2.5 to the now modern 9.0, AOL has been able to stay further ahead than the AOHack programmers. The "warez" rooms of the mid to late 1990s have all but vanished, and the AOHack programs have been relegated to the history of AOL. AOL has also moved away from its proprietary RAINMAN software and begun to focus more on the World Wide Web. As AOL grew in popularity and power, the private rooms used to distribute the programs (server,server2,etc.) became banned, and AOL employees under names and bots such as CATWATCH01 helped eliminate much of these problems. The server and AOHack programs used to be popular and very dangerous to AOL, but have now all but disappeared from the AOL service.

Associated Private Rooms

During the period of increased popularity surrounding these programs, many private rooms on the AOL service were established and inhabited by program traders, and, in many cases, the programmers themselves. These rooms served many purposes and often became think tanks for new features in future programs.
