The ASCOD (Austrian Spanish Cooperation Development) AFV family is the product of a cooperation agreement between Austrian Steyr-Daimler-Puch AG (in 1998 the production of heavy armed vehicles was sold out under the name "Steyr-Daimler-Puch Spezialfahrzeug", which is now the producer) and Spanish Santa Barbara SA. The ASCOD family includes a 105 mm gun Light Tank LT 105, a SAM launcher, an AT missile launcher, mortar carrier, R&R vehicle, Command & Control vehicle, ambulance, artillery observer and the AIFV model.

Armored Infantry Fighting Vehicle

The ASCOD AIFV is actually in service with the Spanish Army (currently 146 units, including 23 of the C&C variant) and the Austrian Army (112 units).
The Spanish ASCOD AIFVs are designated Pizarro and are build by 'Santa Barbara SA'. The Spanish army has already ordered another 170 vehicles which are to be delivered until 2010. The total requirement for the Spanish Army is up to about 300 vehicles.
The Austrian variant is designated Ulan and is built by Steyr-Daimler-Puch AG.

The AIFV model is armed with a 30 mm Mauser MK 30-2 automatic cannon and a 7,62 mm coaxial gun. The turret is gyrostabilized for allowing the vehicle to shot on movement.

It has a Computer Fire System, Night Vision and a laser aiming device.

The Austrian Ulan is powered by a 720 hp 'MTU 8V 1999' diesel engine, while the Spanish Pizarro packs a 600 hp 'MTU 8V-183-TE22' diesel engine.

Light Tank LT 105

The Royal Thai army has asked for 15 units of this version. The main gun is a semiautomatic 105 mm gun with a 7.62 mm coaxial machinegun.

Production History

The ASCOD, is a replacement for the M113 family of APC in the Spanish Army and the Saurer SPZ A1 IFVs in the Austrian Army.
