Formed by the merger of Acer Display Technology, Inc. and Unipac Optoelectronics Corporation, AU Optronics Corporation (AUO) is the world's third largest manufacturer of large-size TFT-LCD panels. AUO is one of the few vendors in the market with the technology to manufacture TFT-LCD panels in sizes ranging from 1.5 inches to greater than 46 inches. In 2002, it became the first TFT-LCD company (one of a select group of Taiwanese high-tech companies) to trade publicly on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE:AUO). AUO is ranked 17th in Business Week's "Global IT Companies" and is a leader in Taiwan's optronics industry.
Employing 23,000 persons worldwide, AU Optronics currently has three TFT-LCD fabs in Taiwan (Hsinchu, Taichung, Lungtan) and a module assembly plant in Suzhou, China. AU Optronics Corporation is a BenQ Group company.
The 7 April 2006, AUO announced its merge for 2.2 billion USD in stock shares of the smaller LCD manufacturer Quanta Display Inc., to form a bigger competitor on the market with a 19% share up from 15% to be compared to the 22% share of LG.Philips LCD or Samsung Electronics.
