Abigail "Abby" Sciuto is a fictional forensic scientist in the NCIS television series by CBS Television, portrayed by Pauley Perrette.
Abby is best known for her totally gothic style of dress, with at least nine tattoos on her neck, arms, back and other places which are only hinted at. She has a happy-go-lucky attitude and has a sweet personality. Abby is a hearing child of deaf parents and likes her music loud.
Although sometimes thought to be a female take on The Lone Gunmen, NCIS creator Donald Bellisario has said in interviews that the character was created to dismiss preconceptions about the gothic subculture. He draws parallels between her character and the lead character from his earlier show Magnum P.I., whom he made a Vietnam vet to try and dismiss similar preconceptions about Vietnam veterans. As a result she is both very goth and very professionally capable.
She is able to communicate in American Sign Language – as can Jethro Gibbs. She gets on well with all the rest of the team, particularly Tony and Gibbs and is fond of Ducky who refers to her as "Abigail". Abby had a relationship with Tim McGee which she stated that she would like to keep casual. Although the relationship ended early in season two, she has exhibited jealousy over the attention that McGee gives to Ziva David.
She is able to manufacture fake IDs easily - this hints at a misspent youth. She was arrested in 1990 for indecent exposure at a Rolling Stones concert in Los Angeles. Abby is very computer savvy – on a par with, or even exceeding, McGee's abilities.
Abby is addicted to a drink called "Caf-Pow". The rest of the team are fully aware of this and bribe her with large cups of it.
Abby is from New Orleans, Louisiana, as is Perrette in real life. Abby graduated with full honors from Louisiana State University with a triple major in Sociology, Criminology and Psychology. She earned her Master's Degree from Georgia State University in Criminology and Forensic Science.
Abby also has a stuffed collar-wearing hippo named Bert, who farts. (introduced in Twilight, and brought back in Season 3 episodes Silver War, Ravenous, and Untouchable). She mentions in one episode she has an uncle named Larry.
Abby is extremely well-versed in her field of study, rarely stumped by the evidentiary puzzles which Gibbs' team present to her; she has been shown to exhibit an almost religious zeal for the field of forensics.
She was briefly stalked by an ex-boyfriend who was caught in Season 3's Bloodbath.
