Adams County is a county located in the U.S. state of Washington. Its name is in honor of the second President of the United States, John Adams. As of 2000, the population is 16,428. The county seat is at Ritzville, and its largest city is Othello.
Adams County was formed out of Whitman County on November 28, 1883.[link]
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 4,998 km² (1,930 mi²). 4,986 km² (1,925 mi²) of it is land and 12 km² (5 mi²) of it (0.25%) is water.Major highways

Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there were 16,428 people, 5,229 households, and 4,094 families residing in the county. The population density was 3/km² (8/mi²). There were 5,773 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (3/mi²). The racial makeup of the county was 64.96% White, 0.28% Black or African American, 0.68% Native American, 0.60% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 30.69% from other races, and 2.75% from two or more races. 47.07% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.There were 5,229 households out of which 44.00% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.50% were married couples living together, 10.10% had a female householder with no husband present, and 21.70% were non-families. 18.70% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.70% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.09 and the average family size was 3.52.
In the county, the population was spread out with 34.20% under the age of 18, 9.80% from 18 to 24, 26.30% from 25 to 44, 19.40% from 45 to 64, and 10.40% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 30 years. For every 100 females there were 104.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 102.10 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $33,888, and the median income for a family was $37,075. Males had a median income of $28,740 versus $21,597 for females. The per capita income for the county was $13,534. About 13.60% of families and 18.20% of the population were below the poverty line, including 24.00% of those under age 18 and 8.90% of those age 65 or over.
Politics
Adams County is probably the most Republican county in Washington. In 2004, it gave George W. Bush 73.16% of the vote. Of the 31 precincts in the county, none voted for John Kerry, and only two gave him more than 40 percent of the vote. Republicans generally receive large margins of victory in Ritzville and Othello, and 4-to-1 or 5-to-1 landslides in the rural areas.Census-recognized communities
