Addis Ababa Agreement

The Addis Ababa Agreement were a series of compromises in 1972, aimed at appeasing the leaders of the insurgency in southern Sudan after the first Sudanese Civil War proved costly to the government in the South. Widespread local autonomy was granted. There followed a decade of relative peace. In 1983 this agreement was cut off by the former president of Sudan, Gaafar Nimeiry, where he then granted an Islamic law.
