Adi Granth
Encyclopedia : A : AD : ADI : Adi Granth
The Adi Granth (Punjabi: , ādi grantha; pronounced Aad Granth), literally "the first book" is an early compilation of the Sikh scriptures by Guru Arjan, the fifth Sikh Guru. Often, the term is used to refer incorrectly to the Guru Granth Sahib. In actual fact, the Guru Granth Sahib is an expansion of the Adi Granth which was written in 1604.
The original copy of the Adi Granth remains in the hands of the Sodhi family of Kartarpur and is known as the Kartarpur Bir. It is said to be eight inches thick with 1,948 pages of which some are blank. [SikhNet News - Sikhs Want Original Granth Back in Golden Temple]
The original granth was stolen by Guru Hargobind's grandson, Dhir Mal. It was later forceably recovered by followers of the ninth guru, Guru Teg Bahadur who were subsequently told to return the holy book to Dhir Mal. Very few people have closely examined the granth, but several Sikh scholars have scrutinised the text and have verified it as being the original. It is now shown only once a year on Vaisakhi.
