Adventitious

Adventitious, in botany, refers to structures that develop in an unusual place, and in medicine, it refers to conditions acquired after birth.
Adventitious roots arise from branches, stems and leaves. These roots usually grow when in places where the plant is in contact with soil or water. Adventitious buds develop from places other than the end of an apical meristem, which occur at the end tip of stems and branches. These buds are formed after the plant is wounded or pruned to replace lost branches. Some plants also have shoots that come out of their roots, which can extend quite a distance from the plant. This can be a form of reproduction in some species. It is comparable to regeneration, an adaptation common in organisms such as the planarium. phyll.
