Aioi (相生市 Aioi-shi) is a city located in Hyōgo, Japan.

As of 2003, the city has an estimated population of 33,381 and the density of 369.14 persons per km². The total area is 90.43 km².

The city was founded on October 1, 1942. Its main industry was shipbuilding which, although in decline, still maintains a strong presence through Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries (IHI).

Aioi is known for the annual dragon boat races during the Aioi Peron Festival (相生ペーロン祭), which takes place on the last weekend of May each year.

The city, surprisingly to some, has a shinkansen stop. The main reason given is for political reasons although Aioi does serve as a gateway stop to Harima Science Garden City which hosts SPring-8, the largest synchrotron in the world, among other scientific orientated institutes and companies.

In November 2005, the city was mentioned in world news reports after a large daikon radish that grew though the pavement was found slashed. At the urging of the mayor a special firework, representing this brave vegetable, was set off at the annual firework display preceding the dragon boat races.[link][link][link]
