Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) is the major command charged with overseeing the United States Air Force's Special Operations Forces (SOF). AFSOC is the air force component of the United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM).

AFSOC was established in May 22, 1990 and is headquartered in Hurlburt Field, Florida.

From the establishment of USSOCOM in June of 1987 until the creation of AFSOC in May 1990, Military Airlift Command's Twenty-Third Air Force (23AF), less its aerospace rescue and aeromedical evacuation units, served as the air force component of USSOCOM, and the commander, Twenty-Third Air Force, served as the air force component commander of USSOCOM.

Lineage

Established as Twenty-Third Air Force on February 10, 1983. Activated on March 1, 1983. Redesignated Air Force Special Operations Command, with the status of a major command, on May 22, 1990.
