The Festival d’Aix-en-Provence is an opera festival that takes place in numerous venues in the centre of the southern French city of Aix-en-Provence throughout July each year. It features international-calibre performances and musicians and is directed by Stéphane Lissner, who is also artistic director of La Scala opera house in Milan. In 2006, it features concerts and operas as well as masterclasses. These include Wagner's Das Rheingold to be conducted by Sir Simon Rattle with Sir Willard White as Wotan; Mozart's The Magic Flute, conducted by young maestro Daniel Harding; Rossini's Italian in Algiers; the Berlin Philharmonic playing Mahler's 5th Symphony;Pierre Boulez, conducting and on the piano and works by English composer Henry Purcell.
