Akamatsu clan
Encyclopedia : A : AK : AKA : Akamatsu clan
The Akamatsu clan was a clan originating in Japan that claimed descent from Minamoto Morifusa of the famous clan of Minamoto. The Akamatsu clan greatly rose in power during that of the Muromachi Period of Japan. This large power gain for the Akamatsu was due to Akamatsu Norimura. Norimura first served under Emperor Go-Daigo in the Kemmu Restoration, but later switched to the Ashikaga side. Norimura was awarded with the governorship of Harima due to this fact. Following the rule of the 3rd Ashikage Shogun, Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, the Akamatsu were shugo for Harima, Bizen, and Mimasaka as well as one of the four families that provided members of the Bakufu’s board of retainers. Following the assassination of Ashikaga Yoshinori in 1441 by Akamatsu Mitsusuke, a damaging result was received from many clans such as the Yamana. Then on following the Sengoku Period of the 16th century the power of the Akamatsu greatly waned. Many rebellions took place within the Akamatsu causing to continually fall, resulting in them becoming mere vassals under the Toyotomi.
