Akia was born and raised in
New York, where she was
home-schooled by her mother. During her early years she spent most of her life traveling throughout the
East Coast of the United States, The
West Indies, and The
Caribbean, where she was fortunate enough to study and observe cultural, dance, and theater. She moved to
NYC in 1997, at the age of 19 to pursue a career in the arts. Akia is the artistic director and founder of
The Rising Sun Performance Company, which is now in its fourth year of existence. In addition to
RSP, she is the director of development for The
Paul Butterfield Fund & Society and company manager for the
New York Innovative Awards.
